Himalaya-focused work that seeks to extend our understanding of the region and/or bring about sustainable development for its people. |

|
The Himalayas are characterized by a unique ecosystem, cultural distinctiveness, and diversity of natural and socio-cultural systems. Its remoteness has, however, left the region behind a near-complete information blind and therefore among the least understood parts of the world. This in turn, has contributed to a socio-political exclusion and severe development neglect of Himalayan communities. At the same time, Himalayan worlds are experiencing an accelerated pace of change. Climate change and a burgeoning population have had a significant impact on the ecosystem while increasing connectivity has resulted in a rapid erosion of cultures and values. There is an immediate need to study the region, document it, and address its needs and issues.
Focused studies are being undertaken by some organisations to enhance the understanding of the Himalayan region and to document its ecology and culture. Scientific initiatives aimed at tracking climatic change in the region are shedding light on the extent and impact of global warming. Himalayan languages are being studied and documented and traditional medicinal knowledge of the region is being codified. At the same time, certain projects and interventions are working on technology development for this region, and other interventions are aiming to bridge the development gap through tailor-made services. |

Himalayan Glaciers & Rivers Project and Climate witness project |
by WWF-Nepal |
The Eastern Himalayas, also known as the water towers of Asia, have the largest concentrations of glaciers outside the polar region. Himalayan Glaciers & Rivers Project and Climate witness project by WWF in Nepal has been documenting the threats posed by retreating glaciers in order to understand the potential environmental crisis. This information is then used for planning effective management and contingency plans with community participation.
The project aims to bring realities of climate change impacts to the public, policy makers and the enthusiasts. The national focus areas for this project are Sagarmatha National Park (SNP) and Kangchenjunga Conservation Area (KCA).
