  The Mountain Institute (TMI)
Sector: Natural Resource Management
Area of Work: Mountain regions across the world

The Mountain Institute (TMI) was established West Virginia in 1972, with a focus on experiential and leadership education for the youth based at the 400-acre nature preserve on the slopes of Spruce Knob. TMI formally expanded into an international organization in 1987, by assisting in the establishment of two new protected areas in Nepal and Tibet. It has regional program offices in Nepal, Peru, Beijing, China and India. The international headquarters in Washington, DC provides technical, logistical and financial support to the regional offices.

The Mountain Institute (TMI) is committed to protecting the world’s mountains through empowering mountain communities and conserving mountain ecosystems. TMI works for a wide variety of government programs as well as with academic and technical partners. TMI's mission further broadened to include economic development and support for traditional culture, as well as the conservation of natural resources in the world's longest, oldest and highest mountain ranges - the Andes, Appalachians, and Himalayas.
